Dave Bond is the Vice President for West Coast Operations for What Are We Fighting For?, Inc. During his 28 year military career he commanded eight Security and Anti-terrorism units and was Assistant Deputy Chief of Staff, Security Police, Headquarters Air Force in Europe overseeing the European Air Forces Anti-terrorism Program.
Heavily involved in the raid on Libya by the United States, he was responsible for the deployment of personnel securing B-52 Bombers conducting raids on the Iraq Republican Guard Forces and the coalition forces bases which launched aircraft during Desert Shield and Storm.

THE RESULTS OF GUN CONTROL!

Whether you agree or not, it's an interesting lesson in history. Something to think about . . .
In 1929, the Soviet Union established gun control. From 1929 to 1953, about 20 million dissidents, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.
In 1911, Turkey established gun control. From 1915 to 1917, 1.5 million Armenians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.
Germany established gun control in 1938 and from 1939 to 1945, a total of 13 million Jews and others who were unable to defend themselves were rounded up and exterminated.
China established gun control in 1935. From 1948 to 1952, 20 million political dissidents, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.
Guatemala established gun control in 1964. From 1964 to 1981, 100,000 Mayan Indians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.
Uganda established gun control in 1970. From 1971 to 1979, 300,000 Christians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.
Cambodia established gun control in 1956. From 1975 to 1977, one million 'educated' people, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.
Defenseless people rounded up and exterminated in the 20th Century because of gun control: 56 million.
At the time of this article, it has now been 12 months since gun owners in Australia were forced by new law to surrender 640,381 personal firearms to be destroyed by their own government, a program costing Australia taxpayers more than $500 million dollars. The first year results are now in:
Australia-wide, homicides are up 3.2 percent
Australia-wide, assaults are up 8.6 percent
Australia-wide, armed robberies are up 44 percent (yes, 44 percent)
In the state of Victoria alone, homicides with firearms are now up 300 percent. (Note that while the law-abiding citizens turned them in, the criminals did not, and criminals still possess their guns!)
While figures over the previous 25 years showed a steady decrease in armed robbery with firearms, this has changed drastically upward in the past 12 months, since criminals now are guaranteed that their prey is unarmed.
There has also been a dramatic increase in break-ins and assaults of the ELDERLY. Australian politicians are at a loss to explain how public safety has decreased, after such monumental effort and expense was expended in successfully ridding Australian society of guns. The Australian experience and the other historical facts above prove it.
You won't see this data on the American evening news or hear our president, governors or other politicians disseminating this information.
Guns in the hands of honest citizens save lives and property and, yes, gun-control laws affect only the law-abiding citizens. Let your elected officials know you support your 2nd Amendment Rights!!!!

My Fellow Patriots,
I decided that for this issue of the "Eagle's Nest" I would include a letter written by a 16 year old in 1963. David Kapus is the brother of a good friend of mine, Marlin DeBell. David was an architectural genius. He passed away in 1984 at the age of 39. His article was called, "What can I do for his Country at age 16?" Where has the desire gone in our younger generation?
"What can I do for his Country at age 16?"
Obviously peace does not present such a definite opportunity for you men and women to evidence their patriotism as does war. Fortunately our one great enemy presently is so overawed by our strength that he is content to concentrate on lesser counties rather than attack us openly.
However, in peacetime there is a tendency among free people to reap the benefits of freedom and democracy without bothering to see if they are in danger. This is when true patriots are needed. There must be someone willing to alert others to the danger of relaxing our guard. A man can easily hear a demagogue battering at his door with tanks and planes but must be shown the thief who is in the dead of nights steals in through an unlocked window.
There are many sedatives which people subscribe to; these are called misconceptions. Misconceptions permit people to ignore their patriotic duties without feeling guilt.
One of the most popular misconceptions is that our heritage really does not mean very much anymore. It goes something like this: although freedom and individualism were healthy and inspiring to the pioneer who had to cave a homestead out of the wilderness, now that we are a modern civilized nation those principles are impeding our progress. The people who believe thus say that further progress lies only through socialism. They say that we must come to think of ourselves collectively rather than individually. These people mistakenly believe that freedom and individualism are only skin deep and may be easily replaced by something else as soon as they become undesirable. But this is not so. The desire for liberty and individual accomplishment are inherent human characteristics and will remain to benefit or haunt our race forever.
Another great illusion present in America today concerns Communism. It is believe by those who wish to ignore their obligations that there is no real threat to us from Communism. They believe that the Russian government is becoming less oppressive while we grow more socialistic and that in time our two nations will become identical and there will be no reason for war. This simply does not fit the facts. Khrushchev and his disciples are as much dedicated to world conquest as was Marx or Engles.
Khrushchev said on September 17th, 1955, "If anyone thinks that our smiles mean the abandonment of the teachings of Marx, Engels and Lenin, he is deceiving himself cruelly. Those who expect this to happen might just as well wait for a shrimp to learn how to whistle." In fact, this illusion of the American public is just what the Communists want. Dmitri Manuilski, who later became presiding officer of the United Nations Security Council, stated in 1930 to the Lenin School of Political Warfare in Moscow, "War to the hilt between communism and capitalism is inevitable. Today, of course, we are not strong enough to attack. To win we shall need the element of surprise. The bourgeoisie will have to be put to sleep. So we shall begin by launching the most spectacular peace movement on record. There will be electrifying overtures and unheard of concessions. The capitalist countries, stupid and decadent, will rejoice to cooperate in their own destruction. They will leap at another chance to be friends. As soon as their guard is down, we shall smash them with our clenched fist."
Here is the great challenge to people who would do something for their country. They must educate themselves concerning these and other misconceptions. They then must alert other people to the dangers which imperil our Republic. We must not be caught napping when the thief with his "clenched fist" climbs in through the window.
Unfortunately, adults seldom take seriously a person barely old enough to drive a car. Still, this does not mean that we need remain silent when an uninformed person makes a whitewashing statement about the U.S.S.R, or permit a television station to broadcast a tranquilizing current even "special" without letting the sponsors know he did not like it.
Today's teenager can also perform conventional patriotic duties such as helping conserve the nation's natural beauty and keeping his body and mind free from dissipation.
But the greatest, duty that a teenager can do for his country today is to keep himself informed on politics, current events and world affairs. Unfortunately, in many instances today's youth is graduating from high school without realizing that things would have been quite different had not our Founding Fathers created a Constitutional Republic with democracy and freedom as the guidelines. There, it is up to the student to learn on his own what is mean by "American Heritage".
A great man once said, "I am only one, but still I am one; I cannot do everything but still I can do something." With enough people doing "something", perhaps the principles of Freedom and Democracy which have produced a happier, healthier, rich population than any other system may yet endure.

Middle-East Imperative

Dear Liberal Friends,
Thank you very much for your recent letters. I will try to answer in more detail. I will also apologize up front for the length of the response, but these are complicated issues requiring more time than even a long letter will allow.
First, let me deal with Iraq. This engagement is so much bigger that just Iraq. What happens in the next year will affect this country and how our kids/grandkids live throughout their lifetime and beyond. Radical Islam has been attacking the west since the seventh century. They have been defeated in the past and decimated to the point of taking hundreds of years to recover. But they can never be totally defeated, as their birth rates are so far beyond civilized world rates that in time they will continue recover and try to dominate again. Well, George Bush just happened to be "on-watch" during this time frame's resurgence. There are eight terror-sponsoring countries that make up the grand threat to the west. Two, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan, just need firm pressure from the west to make major reforms. They need to decide who they are really going to support and commit to that support. That answer is simple. They both will support who they think will hang in there until the end, and win. We are not sending very good signals in that direction right now, thanks to the Democrats.
The other six, Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran, Syria, North Korea and Libya will require regime change or a major policy shift. Now, let's look more closely. Afghanistan and Iraq have both had regime changes, but are being fueled by outsiders from Syria and Iran. We have scared Gaddafi's pants off, and he has give up his quest for nuclear weapons, so I don't think Libya is now a threat. North Korea can be handled diplomatically by buying them off. They are starving. That leaves Syria and Iran. Syria is like a frightened little puppy. Without the support of Iran they will join the stronger side. So where does that leave us? Sooner, or later, we are going to be forced to confront Iran, and it better be before they gain nuclear capability.
In 1989 I served as a Command Director inside the Cheyenne Mountain complex located in Colorado Springs, Colorado for almost three years. My job there was to observe (through classified means) every missile shot anywhere in the world and assess if it was a threat to the US or Canada. If any shot was threatening to either nation I had only minutes to advise the President, as he had only minutes to respond. I watched Iran and Iraq shoot missiles at each other every day, and all day long, for months. They killed hundreds of thousand of their people. Know why? They were fighting for control of the middle-east and that enormous oil supply. At that time, they were preoccupied with their internal problems and could care less about toppling the west. Oil prices were fairly stable and we could not see an immediate threat. Well, the worst part of what we have done as a nation in Iraq is to do away with one of those nations. Now, Iran has a clear field to dominate the middle-east, since Iraq is no longer a threat to them.
They have turned their attention to the only other threat to their dominance, the United States. They are convinced they will win, because the Untied States is so divided, and the Democrats (who now control Congress and will probably control the Presidency in 2008) have openly said we are pulling out. Do you have any idea what will happen if the entire middle-east turns their support to Iran, which they will obviously do if we pull out? It is not the price of oil you will have to worry about. You just won't get it. I WOULD PERSONALLY VOTE FOR ANY PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE WHO DID WHAT JFK DID IN THE SIXTIES--- DECLARE A GOAL TO BRING THIS COUNTRY TO TOTAL ENERGY INDEPENDENCE IN A DECADE. Yes, it is about oil.
The economy in this country will totally die if that middle-east supply is cut off right now. It will not be a recession. It will be a depression that will make 1929 look like the "good-old-days". The bottom line here is simple. If Iran is forced to fall in line, the fighting in Iraq will end over night, and the nightmare will be over. One way or another---one party or the other---Iran must be forced to join modern times and join the global community. It may mean a real war---if so, now is the time, before we face a nuclear Iran with capacity to begin a new ice age, and the first to go will be Israel. I URGE YOU TO READ the book "END GAME" by two of our best middle-east experts, true American patriots and retired military generals, M/G Paul Vallely and Lt Gen Tom McInerney. They are our finest, and totally honest in their assessment of why victory in the middle-east is so important, and how it can be won. Proceeds for the book go directly to memorial fund for our fallen soldiers who served the country during the war on terror. On the other hand, we have several very angry retired generals today, who are angry because they did not make 4-star rank before retirement, who insist on ranting and raving about the war. They are wrong, and doing the country great harm by giving a certain political party reason to use them as experts to back their anti-war claims.
You may be one of those who believe nothing could ever be terrible enough to support our going to war. If that is the case I should stop here, as that level of thinking approaches mental disability in this day and age. It is right up there with alien abductions and high altitude seeding by the government aircraft contrails. I helped produced those contrails for almost 30 years, and I can assure you we were not seeding the atmosphere. The human race is a war-like population, and if a country is not willing to protect itself, it deserves the consequences. Nuff-said!!!
Now, my last comments will get to the nerve. They will be on politics. I am not a Republican. And, George Bush has made enough mistakes as President to insure my feelings about that for the rest of my life. However, the Democratic Party has moved so far left, they have made me support those farther to the right. I am a hardened conservative who totally supports the constitution of this country. The only difference between the United States and the South American, third world, dictator infested and ever-changing South American governments, is our US Constitution.
This Republic (note I did not say Democracy) is the longest standing the world has ever known, but it is vulnerable. It would take so little to change it through economic upheaval. There was a time when politicians could disagree, but still work together. We are past that time, and that is the initial step toward the downfall of our form of government. I think that many view Bush-hating as payback time. The Republicans hated the Clintons and now the Democrats hate Bush. So, both parties are putting their hate toward willingness to do anything for political dominance to include lying and always taking the opposite stand regardless what the opposing party wants to do. JUST HOW GOOD IS THAT FOR OUR COUNTRY?
In my lifetime, after serving in uniform for President's Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan, and Bush I have a pretty good feel for which party supported our military, and what military life was like under each of their terms. And, let me assure you that times were best under the Republicans. Service under Jimmy Carter was devastating for all branches of the military. And, Ronald Regan was truly a salvation. You can choose to listen to enriched newscasters, and foolish people like John Murtha (he is no war hero), Nancy Pelosi, John Kerry, Michael Moore, Jane Fonda , Harry Reid, Russ Feingold, Hillary Clinton, Ted Kennedy, and on-and-on to include the true fools in Hollywood if you like. If you do, your conclusions will be totally wrong. The reason that I write, appear on radio talk shows, and do everything I can to denounce those people is simple. THEY ARE PUTTING THEIR THURST FOR POLITICAL POWER AND QUEST FOR VICTORY IN 2008 ABOVE WHAT IS BEST FOR THIS COUNTRY. I cannot abide that.
Pelosi clearly defied the Logan Act by going to Syria, which should have lead to imprisonment of three years and a heavy fine. Jane Fonda did more to prolong the Vietnam way than any other human being (as acknowledge by Ho in his writing before he died). She truly should have been indicted for treason, along with her radical husband Tom Hayden, and forced to pay the consequences. This country has started to soften by not enforcing its laws, which is another indication of a Republic about to fall. All Democrats, along with the Hollywood elite, are sending us headlong into a total defeat in the middle-east, which will finally give Iran total dominance in the region. A lack of oil in the near future will be the final straw that dooms this Republic. However, if we refuse to let this happen and really get serious about an energy self-sufficiency program, this can be avoided. I am afraid that we are going in the opposite direction. If we elect Hillary Clinton and a Democrat controlled congress, and they carry through with allowing Iran to take control of the middle-east, it will be over in terms of what we view as the good life in the USA.
Now, do I think that all who do not support the war are un-American---of course not. They just do not understand the importance of total victory in that region. Another failure of George Bush is his inability to explain to the American people why we are there, and why we MUST win. By the way, it is not a war. The war was won four years ago. It is martial law that is under attack by Iranian and Syrian outside influences, and there is a difference.
So, what do I believe? What is the bottom line? I will simply say that the Democratic Party has fielded the foulest, power hungry, anti-country, self absorbed group of individuals (who have been voted into office) that I have observed in my lifetime. Our educational system is partially to blame for allowing the mass of America to be taken in by this group. George Bush has done the best he can with the disabilities that he possesses. A President must communicate with the people. And, I would tell you that Desert Storm spoiled the people. Bush Senior's 100 hour war convince the people that technology has progressed to the point that wars could be fought with no casualties and won in very short periods of time. I remember feeling at the time, that this was a tragedy for the US military. To win wars, you must put boots on the ground. When you put boots on the ground, soldiers are going to die. A President must make the war decision wisely, and insure that the cause is right before using his last political option. CONTROLLING IRAN AND DEMOCRATIZING THE MIDDLE EAST IS THE ONLY CHOICE IF WE ARE HELL-BENT ON DEPENDING ON THEM FOR OUR FUTURE ENERGY NEEDS.
This rose colored glasses approach that Nancy Pelosi is taking may be a bench-mark in history---a turning point for this country. We are no longer capable of making the hard decisions. The ACLU frightens everyone. We are taking personal freedom to extreme levels. You can say anything about anyone, wear anything or lack there-of, even kill in this country and serve minimum time (many times none at all). This is the definition of liberal thinking, and it has gone too far.
And my final point---The article that I assume you read posted on the internet and titled, "Let's be Specific" was posted by over 1800 sites at one point. It surprised me as to the coverage that the little article received. Of over 200 responses via telephone, letters and emails, and multiple requests for talk show interviews, only four negatives have received. That could be viewed as your being in the minority.

Military Fathers, Mothers & Sons

Recently at Fort Benning, Georgia, I stood with a friend and proud mom whose family history and mine are intertwined for the rest of our lives.
This was the second time she and I had stood with pride and honor for a son.
The first was on a sunny, but chilly day in February, 2004, at Fort Polk, Louisiana when my husband and I met Barbara Maggard, wife to U.S. Army 1st Sgt R. Maggard of the 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment/2nd Squadron/Eagle Troop. The unit our son Sgt Patrick Tainsh deployed with on April 1, 2003 to Iraq, but returned without as he came home to us alone beneath the flag of his nation after his death in Baghdad, February 11, 2004. We had come together at the Fort Polk chapel for a meaningful memorial service held for Patrick and PFC Ramirez who had also died in the same ambush.
In late April, 2004 the heroic, unsung 2nd ACR minus eight returned to Fort Polk, a post where many from Fort Benning have trained. In September we received a call from 1st Sgt Maggard. On a road trip with his family from Fort Polk toward Georgia, they wanted to visit us. Within days, the Maggards with their then seventeen year old son and twelve year old daughter sat with us inside our home. During the visit the 1st Sgt's stories about Patrick brought laughter and pride. But before that visit ended, we all shared tears after my question of what happened the night of February 11, 2004. We heard the story, retold in my book: Heart of A Hawk. www.heartofahawk.com, while also learning from the 1st Sgt that both he and CO Captain Corn, who had already contacted us, were both holding Patrick when he died. Our son, the cavalry scout and COs gunner who had cleared the area to save them and others after an ambush. Actions during which Patrick, at the onset, had been mortally wounded by an IED explosion, and that subsequently led to his receiving, posthumously, both the Bronze and Silver Stars. But nothing made my husband, a USMC Sgt Major (retired), more proud than learning from the 1st Sgt that Patrick had always said he wanted to make his dad proud, and just as his dad , wanted to become a Sgt Major.
Was this hard for all of us to talk about? Yes. Was it a catharsis for each of us? Yes. Was it a gift? Most certainly. 1st Sgt Maggard and his family gave us a gift that evening that has bonded us for our lifetime to come. After their leaving that evening, we have maintained constant e-mail communication with the Maggards and also the Corns. Captain Corn, now Major, received orders for Ft. Irwin. 1st Sgt Maggard, now Sgt Major, received orders for Texas, then Alaska, and is currently back in Iraq, where he expects to see his only son any day now.
This is the part that really gives me chills and makes me want to sing the praises of the American military family. This is the part that is so amazing about the Maggard family. Young B. Maggard, 20, who knows his dad's experiences in Baghdad with the 2nd ACR, who knows how Patrick and others in the unit died in 2003-2004, and knows of the losses his dad's current unit is taking, this amazing American son, the son of Sgt Major R. Maggard, chose to join the United States Army.
This is what led me and my husband to stand at Fort Benning with Barbara Maggard, a proud army wife and mom who has also served in the armed forces. This time we honored her son whose paternal grandmother, also there, served in the Army Nurse Corps in the 1950's. Both of young Maggard's grandfathers also served in the military as did uncles. The sun couldn't outshine the legacy of family pride that glowed in the face and stature of PFC Maggard, now another gallant member of the U.S. infantry and the new greatest generation.
I asked Barbara that if with all she knew of military life, strain, and sacrifice, if she or her husband either one had tried to talk their son out of joining the armed forces. Of course, I already knew the answer. "No," she said. "This is something he's always said from a child he wanted to do. He's at a place to make his own decisions. His dad and I will support him as he asks."
I ask PFC Maggard if he had any reservations at all, and of course I knew that answer.
"No ma'am. I'm proud to serve my country. I can think of nothing better. There's an enemy we have to help the Iraqi people defeat. Our nation's at risk. I just want to get to Iraq while my dad is still there."
For now, Barbara remains in Alaska with her daughter. We are all blessed to have those like her husband and son, volunteers of the less than one percent of our nation's population, to stand the lines to protect us from an enemy that swears to destroy our civilization. In a message from her two days ago I learned that Barbara's son is now at Fort Bragg preparing to leave for Iraq within ten days. His dad, a leader our son looked up to and who we are thankful to for allowing us to become part of his family, has been extended in Iraq and awaits his son's arrival. I asked Barbara what she thought about the extension. She says that after over twenty years as a military wife, not counting the years she served, she's learned its part of the job. "It's who we are. There's pride in serving our country. I wouldn't have it any other way."
I agreed, saying that when I was an active duty wife I would tell young wives during our husbands' deployments, "hey, you know who and what you married, pull the boot straps up, be the woman they need."
When I ask her about plans for retirement, Barbara said she and her husband, a college graduate who after the military wants to teach, would like to live near Fort Benning. With that, I couldn't think of anything else that would make me happier, because we're more than family, we're a military family bonded for the rest of our lives through love, dedication, courage, sacrifice, and pride in a lifestyle few will ever understand. Dear all,
Last evening, 50 miles from our home, Dave and I met and spoke with the parents and wife of Sgt. Brandon Hadaway, crew chief on the Chinook shot down in Afghanistan on June 4. Four others also gave their lives.
With tears, we held their hands, looked in their red, strained grieving eyes and let them know we truly knew their pain and would be available to them in days to come. Something I'd have given anything for after Patrick's death.
Something now that is a part of our journey, to be available for those who still follow our paths.
It was hard, still after over three years, but worth it to have them grab us and thank us for being there, for understanding. For looking into each other's eyes and all agreeing, "they are our heroes, aren't they."
Brandon left behind a beautiful, petite wife, Rachel, and three children, his youngest an 8 month old.
The community of Valley, Alabama came together for this family where visitation was held at the community center and a long line of guests filed through with condolences, hugs, and love.
The funeral service is today, Friday, 5:00 p.m. also at the community center in order to provide enough room for all who will come to honor this hero and his loved ones. Unfortunately, Dave and I will be leaving today to go out of town, and will not be able to be present.
But we told the Hadaway family, that after everyone returns to their "normal" lives, we will be standing by 24/7, for we know the journey of the days to come, days that will seem to remain forever dark, but as the sunshine after a storm, light will slip through, although we are all forever changed.

P S As we stood in line waiting our turn to meet the family, I found myself speaking to another mom who was a friend of the family. Her son is in the Air Force and on his way to Iraq. Did we cry together? Yes. Was she bitter? No. She still stood proud.

Words to loose by - They will let me have; I am allowed; I get to have; They are going to give me- - - and on and on - - - As the duke would say, "Are you going to give me a fair day's work? (yes) and for that fair days work, am I going to pay you a fair days wage? (yes) Then, you will not give me anything and I will not give you anything, we will both give and take."
People get so caught up in what is allowed and what they can have that they forget what they actually need and what's best for them. The key is to find what's best for you and give someone what's best for them at the same time, creating a win/win for everyone. This is so ingrained in us that we even go through this ritual with ourselves.
People think mostly of what they are going to lose or have to give up, never considering what they will gain in the process. I know people that have gone on every diet imaginable and I have watched them devoid themselves of any self-worth because they thought in terms of what would go wrong and how it could fail and what the RULEs were. I say, "CROSS THAT BRIDGE WHEN YOU GET TO IT." Focus on what you are going to gain and don't get so caught up in the details that you make yourself prone to fail before you ever start or worse you do nothing at all because you are afraid of failing.
I am doing this because it is what is best for me, not because that is what the rules tell me or because it is what I am allowed. I will gain X, Y & Z because I am doing it, not loose A, B & C. I will do it expecting to succeed, but be proud that I at least tried, if I fail. Maybe if I break it down into smaller achievements I will amaze myself with successes and never realize all of those other things that did not go right or were not achieved.

Don't be Destined for Mediocrity

Mediocre equals ordinary. Nothing too bad, nothing too special. Ordinary. Defined, mediocrity means, "the state or quality of being mediocre, of mediocre ability or accomplishment or a mediocre person." So basically, you can be mediocre, your organization can be mediocre or the job you do can be mediocre. One definition of Mediocre is, "neither good nor bad; merely adequate." Another is, "moderate to inferior in quality; ordinary." Some people settle for adequate. In my opinion, adequate is not an option!
Andrew Carnegie, tells us that, "People who are unable to motivate themselves must be content with mediocrity, no matter how impressive their other talents." What creates motivation? That's up to you, as they say, "different strokes for different folks!" Motivation goes back to extra effort, the commitment to succeed, courage to face failure, learn from it and move forward and to an extent, an inner arrogance! Probably one of the most arrogant athletes ever, former Heavyweight Champion Muhammad Ali once said, "I am the greatest. I said that even before I knew I was. Don't tell me I can't do something. Don't tell me it's impossible. Don't tell me I'm not the greatest. I'm the double greatest." Nothing ordinary about Ali, is there?
Ordinary. Is your approach ordinary? Is your service ordinary? Are you ordinary? Or do you have the Ali arrogance to believe you are the "double greatest?" How does one become the "double greatest?" Let's discuss service. In many market places, service is the greatest differentiator. You have to be the "double greatest," or you are destined to be mired in mediocrity. You are destined to be ordinary or just like anyone else. Inferior to the best.
Here's an example. Recently, I was in the Houston airport and had a significantly delayed flight. It was the end of the day, tired and hungry, myself and several associates roosted in one of the airport's many "watering holes." It had been a long day, yet a productive one. One of my associates wanted nachos. OK, that's pretty easy, right? Wrong. The server's response was, "Sorry, we are out of queso." Hmmm. I heard this while reviewing the menu getting ready to place my order. So, being one who doesn't like to be ordinary and likes to get out of the little 4X4 box, I asked if they had any cheeseburgers. The answer was, yes. Hmmm. So I ask, "queso is cheese, right?" So, I asked, "Why can't you use the cheese from the cheeseburgers for the nachos?" Wow, what an idea. It actually worked and she got to enjoy her nachos (and they were good too!). About 30 minutes later, our table overheard the patrons next to us order nachos, from the same server. To be the "double greatest," wouldn't you think this server would go outside of the 4X4 box now knowing that the kitchen could now use the cheeseburger cheese to make nachos? Not even, his response was, "Sorry, we are out of queso." He had a chance to beat mediocrity, but fell right back in. Great customer focus and service, huh?
Unfortunately, that scenario happens far too often. It may be a restaurant, or it may be any other business you can think of (yes, even an insurance company). It can be you too. Our server in Houston had the opportunity to set himself apart, but couldn't get outside of the box. He's obviously destined for mediocrity with that attitude or better yet that lack of customer focus. Whether it be your presentation, personal or professional, service, attitude or activity, always strive to make it the "double greatest." A life of mediocrity means you will never take "it" to the next level. A life of mediocrity means you will never be as successful as you or your organization want to be. Einstein's definition of insanity is, "Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result." Repeating something that's giving you average and similar results is pure mediocrity. Always be prepared mentally to challenge yourself to try different and new things and think outside the box. Allow yourself to be motivated, to give the extra effort and to have the aforementioned Ali type arrogance to say you were not just the "double greatest" at what you do, but maybe even the "triple greatest! "
That, just like everything else, is entirely up to you! American Inventor, Charles F. Kettering, says that "Our imagination is the only limit to what we can hope to have in the future." What if that Houston airport server had any imagination at all? He obviously did not and that is the difference between greatness or mediocrity. That would have set him apart from being ordinary. Set yourself apart - don't settle for ordinary! Don't be merely adequate - to win, that's not an option! |

There is good news and bad news. The good news is the massive contact effort has worked and the Immigration Reform process has been shelved. The bad news is it has not been defeated. The politicians are already making plans to reintroduce a modified plan. My forecast is that it will be equally as unfair, unreasonable and ineffective as this one.
Here is the rest of the story, pat yourself on the back and recognize a minor victory but do not allow yourself to be lulled into thinking that we've won. The battle ain't over yet. Keep up the pressure! Keep calling and writing, don't let the momentum die because if it does - this will be shoved down your throats or up something else.

Terrorists Use Mexico to Enter U.S.

And these same Islamic terrorists may also be using Mexico as the conduit to bring nuclear devices into the U.S. for a WMD attack. These are among the chilling disclosure from Paul L. Williams, author of the just-released book "The Day of Islam: The Annihilation of America and the Western World."
According to Williams, al-Qaida has already hatched plans to smuggle nuclear materials across the Mexican border and use them for a mammoth simultaneous attack on several large U.S. cities.
Al-Qaida and other terrorist groups began infiltrating Mexico in the days after 9/11. By 2003, Canadian intelligence officials and Interpol told Mexican President Vincente Fox that al-Qaida had established several cells in Mexico to prepare for the next terrorist attacks, Williams tells readers.
Meanwhile hundreds of Tzozil Indians in southern Mexico converted to Islam and reportedly became involved in subversive activities. By 2004, al-Qaida cells were in place in northern Mexico and a large cell of Hezbollah was in Tijuana, on the U.S. border of California. The Muslim radicals enlisted the aid of Latino gangs, including Mara Salvatrucha, to help them slip across the border.
According to Williams, the going rate for such service was from $30,000 to $50,000, but it included a bogus matricular consular, an official ID card issued by the Mexican government that enables Mexican nationals in the U.S. to obtain drivers licenses and open bank accounts.
Steve McCraw, assistant director of the FBI's Office of Intelligence, told the House Judiciary Committee in June 2003:
"The ability of foreign nationals to use the matricular consular provides an opportunity for terrorists to move freely within the United States without triggering name-based watch lists that are disseminated to local police officials."
Mexico has also become a conduit for aliens from terror- sponsoring states, known as "special-interest aliens," or SIAs. By 2006, a popular entry route from Mexico into Arizona was littered with "discarded Muslim prayer rugs, pages from the Quran, instructions in Arabic on how to cross the Rio Grande, and beverage boxes with Farsi and Arabic letters," writes Williams, a seasoned investigative reporter and former FBI consultant.
Due to a lack of detention facilities, those SIAs that are apprehended - who have numbered in the thousands in recent years - are released from custody after receiving hearing dates from immigration judges. Fewer than 5 percent actually show up for their hearing. The rest simply vanish.
Texas Rep. Solomon Ortiz, a Democrat on the House Armed Services Committee's Subcommittee on Readiness, said the release of Middle Easterners with possible links to al-Qaida is "very, very scary and members of Congress know about this."
In April 2004, the FBI arrested al-Qaida operative Mohammed Junaid Babar, after he returned to New York City from a terrorist summit meeting in Pakistan. He told interrogators that al-Qaida was preparing a nuclear attack on American cities. He also said the terrorists were relying on Latino gangs, most notably Mara Salvatrucha, to transport the operatives, along with nuclear supplies, across the U.S.- Mexican border.
Another captured terrorist later confirmed Babar's account. And both men said the plot was being directed by Adnan el- Shukrijumah, the man profiled in a NewsMax story last week - whom Williams calls "the most dangerous person in the Western world."

The Sneeze
They walked in tandem, each of the ninety-two students filing into the already crowded auditorium. With rich maroon gowns flowing and the traditional caps, they looked almost as grown-up as they felt.
Dads swallowed hard behind broad smiles, and Moms freely brushed away tears.
This class would not pray during the commencements - not by choice, but because of a recent court ruling prohibiting it.
The principal and several students were careful to stay within the guidelines allowed by the ruling. They gave inspirational and challenging speeches, but no one mentioned divine guidance and no one asked for blessings on the graduates or their families.
The speeches were nice, but they were routine, until the final speech received a standing ovation.
A solitary student walked proudly to the microphone. He stood still and silent for just a moment, and then, it happened. All 92 students, every single one of them, suddenly SNEEZED!!!!
The student on stage simply looked at the audience and said, "GOD BLESS YOU, each and every one of you!" And he walked off stage.
The audience exploded into applause. The graduating class found a unique way to invoke God's blessing on their future with or without the court's approval.

From a Chaplain in Iraq

"I recently attended a showing of "Superman 3" here at LSA Anaconda. We have a large auditorium we use for movies as well as memorial services and other large gatherings. As is the custom back in the States, we stood and snapped to attention when the National Anthem began before the main feature. All was going as planned until about three-quarters of the way through the National Anthem the music stopped.
Now, what would happen if this occurred with 1,000 18-22 year-olds back in the States? I imagine there would be hoots, catcalls, laughter, a few rude comments, and everyone would sit down and call for a movie. Of course, that is, if they had stood for the National Anthem in the first place.
Here, the 1,000 Soldiers continued to stand at attention, eyes fixed forward. The music started again. The Soldiers continued to quietly stand at attention. And again, at the same point, the music stopped. What would you expect to happen? Even here I would imagine laughter as everyone sat down and expected the movie to start.
Here, you could have heard a pin drop. Every Soldier stood at attention. Suddenly there was a lone voice, then a dozen, and quickly the room was filled with the voices of a thousand Soldiers
'And the rockets red glare, the bombs bursting in air, gave proof through the night that our flag was still there. O say does that star-spangled banner yet wave, o'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?'
It was the most inspiring moment I have had here in Iraq. I wanted you to know what kind of Soldiers are serving you here.

Family and Friends,
Greetings from Kuwait in the name of our risen Savior, Jesus Christ. In this latest letter I want to focus on Memorial Day and speak about the meaning of freedom. First, let me give you a brief update on my activities and experiences lately. Since my last letter to you I have completed trips to Afghanistan and Iraq, and have spoken to dozens of our soldiers. As always, most of them display a level of maturity and resiliency which amazes and heartens me. They are mission focused and intent on winning this war.
I'm sure most of you are aware of the tour extensions of our active duty units, for a further three months. I asked one young infantryman about that and his reply with a smile on his face was, "Oh, it's not that big of a deal sir. Whether I'm here or back in the states I'll still get up every day and do my job?" This is not to say our soldiers are "happy" about deployment extensions, but they understand we are at war with people holding an ideology which says they must destroy us and our way of life. So, rather than complain about relatively minor nuisances of a three month extension, absence from family, and missing the comforts of home, these fine soldiers are focused on making sure Islamic extremists are defeated on the field of battle here, so we won't have to worry about them attacking Americans in the United States. In short, most of our soldiers maintain a great and positive attitude, based at least in part on the knowledge they are doing the right thing and moving toward their goal.
It has gotten hot here. Temperatures in both Iraq and Kuwait are already topping out at near 120 degrees. During the worst of the summer heat however, those temperatures can occasionally reach 140 degrees in the desert. That is dangerously hot. Thank God for Gatorade. The coming of the heat also means we see more of the wildlife, indigenous to this area. In other words, scorpions, lizards, beetles, camel spiders, and snakes. You ask what a camel spider is? Imagine an arachnid which stretches as much as a full foot from the tip of its forward legs to the tip of its back legs. That is one big spider!
During my travels around theater I was honored to be the keynote speaker at the prayer breakfast for one of the units in Iraq. The subject was Memorial Day, and since it is the concept of freedom that fired the imaginations of those patriots who were willing to give the last full measure of devotion for their country, I spoke on freedom, specifically how it was defined by the founders of our great nation. That brings us to our subject today: Memorial Day and the liberty that gives it meaning.
Memorial Day is a solemn, and pathos laden remembrance of the long line of American soldiers past, and present, who made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation's freedom. Originally known as Decoration Day, it was observed on the 30th of May. It was a day of remembrance for soldiers, from both sides of the conflict, who died during the course of our Civil War. The date was marked with parades, sprucing up the graves of the war dead, and solemn ceremonies to remember their sacrifice. Unfortunately today, such activities aren't observed nearly often enough. In 1971, Congress changed observance of the holiday to the last Monday in May and extended it to honor all soldiers who died in America's wars.
What I'm most interested in though, is what this thing called freedom is, that has inspired so many of our best people to willingly walk into the Valley of the Shadow of Death, in its defense. Is it merely a "political freedom", under which people can do, without any consequence whatsoever, anything they desire, whether or not they should? From the writings of our national founders, it is obvious freedom, or liberty, meant something much more to them. I would like to explore that with you today.
Our nation is founded on two seminal documents, the Declaration of Independence, and the Constitution of the United States of America. The Declaration of Independence serves as the preamble for the Constitution, and provides the context to understand the liberties annunciated in the Constitution. Without the Declaration, one can't even begin to understand what the writers of the Constitution intended when writing that document. The Constitution further includes the Bill of Rights, which originally began as ten legal statements defining strict limitations on the powers of the federal government. Interestingly, the first of these statements limits among other things, the federal government's ability to restrict our religious freedoms. Members of the Armed Forces of the United States of America, take an oath in which we swear among other things, "To uphold the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic." So how did our founders look at the subject of freedom?
On the eve of our War for Independence, in the city of Richmond, Virginia, 39 year old Patrick Henry arose from his seat, gravely strode to the front of the Virginia Assembly, provocatively threw a glove to the floor and orated one of the greatest speeches, and clear definitions of the costs of liberty, in American history. Then as now, Americans were divided over whether to fight a war. Most people then, as now, opposed war. Thank God those like Henry prevailed, who understood that if one stood for freedom, war would have to be fought, otherwise, you and I may not be free today. By the time his speech concluded with a defining question and emphatic answer, no one had any doubt where Henry stood on the question of American liberty, or what it would take to see it birthed. Do you remember his question and his answer? "What is it that gentlemen wish? What would they have? Is life so dear, or peace so sweet, as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery? Forbid it, Almighty God! I know not what course others may take; but as for me, give me liberty or give me death!"
I believe too few of us really understand what Patrick Henry intended when he addressed his subject that early spring day. I think most people merely look at his "Give me liberty, or give me death!" statement, as political defiance against a tyrant, something like the way Cecil B. DeMille presents his subject in the classic film "The Ten Commandments." Admittedly during scenes of the golden calf, DeMille speaks a little about the evil of sin, of doing what is wrong, and God's judgment on that sin, but the primary subject of the movie is political freedom. But not the broad concept of liberty that envisions human beings truly set free to dream and carry to completion all the greatest endeavors they can dream. By contrast, Patrick Henry's statement was defiant, and it was certainly made against the whims of a tyrant. But that is beside the point.
First, Henry was a Christian and it was from a Judeo-Christian worldview he thought and spoke. Therefore, he strongly believed human beings to be created in the image of God, and therefore having the right to exercise their free will in accordance with the rule of law, not the whims of a dictator who saw himself above the law. Further, when he and other of our founders spoke of the rule of law, they understood adamantly all legitimate law originates from God, and therefore must be in compliance with God's supreme law, in order to have any legitimacy at all.
Our founders thought very different from many today. For instance, the modern, legal construct of separation of church and state would have been foreign to them. Look in your Constitution all you want. It's not there. Further, the First Article of the Bill of Rights was placed in the Constitution to enumerate that law in the United States was to protect religious liberty, not define how religious liberty could be restricted. It is from this understanding, by the way, that every article of the Bill of Rights limits the power of the federal government, not the freedoms of the people.
This is why John Adams, our second President, said of our Constitution, "This Constitution was written for a moral and religious people, and is entirely inadequate for any other." Why? Because of the extremely broad freedoms our constitution affords. You see, a moral and religious people responsibly restrain their baser natures even when the law does not specifically do so. On the other hand, an immoral, or even worse, amoral, people, refuse to restrain themselves unless the law forces them, and even then look for a way around the law. And who can seriously argue any real morality arises from people who lack a disposition to religion?
Second, Henry could confidently say give me liberty or give me death because he didn't see the grave as the end, but rather the beginning of eternal life. Death held no fear for him, because he strongly believed the cessation of his earthly life was when his Savior would take him into a full and happy, life eternal. As a Chaplain in the conduct of this war, I have witnessed many times how our people's faith has brought them through loss, even the terrible loss of a family member in the holy cause of liberty.
In summary, Henry, and all our founders, believed it was man who made slaves, not God, and further, since God is the author of all legitimate law, no man has the right to utilize the yoke of law to force his fellow man into political, and in the case of our current enemy, religious, servitude. In short, Henry's statement is more about people having moral freedom, than it is about political freedom. And since God is the creator of law and created law with human liberty in mind, man's rights are derived from Him, rather than government. So while legitimate government defends freedom, government is not the source of freedom. Therefore, it follows, when people are truly walking in moral freedom, with representatives elected by the people doing the same, the result is always political, as well as, moral, freedom.
So when our national founders affixed their signature to a document, The Declaration of Independence, which by their signing might very well mean their death if captured by the British, they held a broad concept of liberty. To them, the connotations of this concept went way beyond the merely political. And in fact, it is this broader concept of liberty, Americans of all generations have fought and bled to uphold. In truth, it is only in this broader concept of liberty we as Americans can remain confident of our freedoms, if we remain constant in their defense. Why, because of all nations under heaven, only we, the Americans, and more recently, the people of the Philippines have enshrined in our foundational documents that it is God who gives us liberty, not any government of man. Interestingly, it is precisely because of their history with their own tyrant, Ferdinand Marcos, the people of the Philippines made this change to their constitution. They found, as have others, that anything a government of man can "give", that government can also take. Therefore no government of man can have any right to take from us, what only God can give us.
Today, in far flung countries of the Middle East our service people are fighting tyranny again. And while we are making gains and seeing more signs of success, it will be a long, tough fight to defeat Islamic Fascism, as it was a long, tough fight to defeat Nazi Fascism in World War II. A number of tribes in Baghdad recently approached us to help them fight against and defeat Al Qaida in Iraq. This is wonderful news, but it has only come about because of the outstanding efforts of great soldiers fighting the good fight, some of whom have made the ultimate sacrifice for liberty. We must realize these gains, while very important, are only tenuous and can be lost if we now leave because people back home believe the battle to be too difficult, or not worth the costs. It is difficult, but it is also worth the costs. As I said in my last letter, "Wars are won in the will before they are won on the battlefield." If you have the will to win, we will. My message to you and anyone you would send this letter to is, stay the course!
I pray you had a wonderful and meaningful Memorial Day. Please remember your veterans everywhere as it was by their sweat and blood this precious gift of freedom has been defended through the decades of our nation. Keep us in your prayers.
