The holidays have come and gone and the New Year is definitely upon us. 2008 is set to be one heck of a year. The political circus will continue on until the November elections and then we will move into the political theater again. One thing is for sure, we will have a new President. Another thing for sure is no one can say who it will be yet.
At WAWFF we're making some changes also. I want to thank each of you for helping make WAWFF a reality and a viable alternative to educating our citizens. You will notice a significant change in the appearance of the web site. We're streamlining it and hopefully you will find it a little more user friendly.
More focus will also be placed on the Red, White and Blue Speaker's Bureau. We have assembled a fine list of speakers that are subject maker experts in their fields. Be watching for information on each of them. We have also added a fund raising program to help other agencies in need of increasing their operational capacities.
Finally, we will be focusing more on the good things that are happening in our country than the negative. If you have stories about great Americans, or stories that are motivational - you get the idea - send them to us.
Let's join together to make 2008 a year to remember. Happy New Year.

Dave Bond is the Vice President for West Coast Operations for What Are We Fighting For?, Inc. During his 28 year military career he commanded eight Security and Anti-terrorism units and was Assistant Deputy Chief of Staff, Security Police, Headquarters Air Force in Europe overseeing the European Air Forces Anti-terrorism Program.
Heavily involved in the raid on Libya by the United States, he was responsible for the deployment of personnel securing B-52 Bombers conducting raids on the Iraq Republican Guard Forces and the coalition forces bases which launched aircraft during Desert Shield and Storm.

SOCIALISM---IS AMERICA READY

The last time, this country was confronted with the possibility of electing a Socialist leaning President was in 1972, and George McGovern was the candidate. I was assigned to the United States Air Force Academy as an AOC (Air Officer Commanding) at the time. At a weekly meeting with the Commandant of Cadets, the Brigadier General said, "Gentleman, during this election, you again have the opportunity to do something good for your country". He did not tell us how to vote, but we all understood what he meant. George McGovern would dismantle the US military, as was done immediately following WWII. This did not quite make sense, as we were still in the middle of a war in Vietnam from which I had just returned. There were forty young patriots in that room, and all exhaled Red, White, and Blue. We understood that such a philosophy would seriously jeopardize the welfare and the security of our country. Guess where we stood???
The American People soundly rejected George McGovern's politics, and the Democratic Party learned a valuable lesson. America was not ready for Socialism, so the Democrats moved the party closer to the center.
The question remains, where does the country stand today? Faced with the same option, will a sleepy American people allow the disaster to occur in 2008? There have been some changes since 1972 that may allow the unthinkable to happen. I spent my entire working life-time training to defend, or defending, this great nation against the threat of Socialism, which I define as "practice Communism". My greatest fear today is that even though the external threat was unable to accomplish the unthinkable, it might be possible from within.
During the McCarthy years of the 1950s, Socialists in this country were forced to hide or find cover. Blacklists were prevalent in Hollywood, and the mood of the country left little room for the left-leaning. As could be predicted, the far-left found refuge for most part in the Democratic Party. Occasionally, they raised their heads, such as in 1972, but just as often they were met with rejection. It appears that the trend has run its course. Extreme amounts of money from the far-left have energized the Democratic Party, the Hollywood elite and the enriched main-stream media. Blitzed by the constant ranting from these sources, it appears the American people are equally divided between the two major political parties. This is frightening to me.
I must admit to being a present day conservative, which was not always the case. I remember in 1960 casting my very first vote in a Presidential election, for JFK. I was right out of college and a new electrical engineer ready to conquer the world. Looking back, JFK would make a pretty good Republican in this day and age. So, things change, and the Democratic Party left me. I did not leave it. The party moved so far left, that I could no longer support its outlandish pursuits, such as redistribution of wealth, over taxation, and government control of everything. It has become obvious that the present day Democratic Party was not the one our Fathers knew and supported.
Look with an open mind at the Democratic Party over the past 12 months, and it is revealing. The American people are tired of the war in Iraq, but not those fighting it, which is reflected in the polls. The Democrats are totally poll driven, so they have gone overboard in degrading the war effort, and unfortunately, those who are fighting it. Let's look at a few who run our country now and in the past.
Harry Reid, the Senate Majority Leader, knows that the tide has turned in Iraqi war, which is absolutely the heart of the War-On-Terror in the broader picture. His prediction that "the war is lost", at a time our troops were giving their lives in pursuit of success, was totally wrong. Yet, he still attempts to send legislation to the President demanding immediate surrender and with-drawl. This is the work of a traitor in my opinion.
Nancy Pelosi, the Speaker of the House, continues to sport the deer-in-the-headlight smile and support Reid. My question is simply, will she ever get over her elevated position of being third in line for the Presidency, and start thinking of more important issues? In my opinion, Ms Pelosi is the classic, closet Socialist, but then, she has an enormous amount of company in the Democratic Party. It is tough remaining number one.
John Murtha served in Korea, but I understand he never made it to the war zone. He plays the war hero card, yet he does nothing but oppose, and degrade, our men and women in uniform.
John Kerry (I realize you are tired of hearing about this guy, but he is the Democratic-mold in my opinion) voted against the Bradley Fighting Vehicle, the M-1 Abrams Tank, every Aircraft Carrier since 1988, the Aegis anti-aircraft system, the F-15 Strike Eagle, newer F-16 upgrades, the P-3 Orion upgrade, and to kill the B-1 Bomber. He is truly anti-military and a liar to boot, which detrimentally affected our efforts in Vietnam, and now the Middle-East. This guy actually had the audacity to run for President of this great nation. Again, the people were smart enough to reject such nonsense.
I understand Dick Durbine has accused our troops at Guantomino of being Nazis, tenders of Soviet style gulags and bad as Pol Pot, who murdered two million of his own people. Yea, these guys sure support our troops.
Ted Kennedy appears to be anti-military, anti-America, and should have served hard time over the death of Mary Jo Kopeckni years ago. I honestly don't think he has had a clear thought in 20 years---Just my opinion, I could be wrong.
In my opinion the bottom of this barrel may be Al Gore. Gore is a loser, and a poor one at that. He now needs a cause. What better than an emotional issue like global warming, which cannot be proven one way or the other. He is smart, but could care less about this nation. Gore is becoming a very rich man with this single-minded idea, and when he feels he might win, we will see him again running hard from the far-left.
Jimmy Carter, the father of the Radical-Islam movement, aided the downfall of the Shah of Iran in 1979, allowing the Ayatollah Khomeini to begin the Radical-Islam resurgence we are witnessing today. No need to mention the 18% inflation and 18% interest rates during his tax-raising term. Will they ever learn that tax breaks fuel the economy?
I think the following far-left names are self explanatory: Russ Feingold, Chuck Schumer, Diane Feinstein, Barbara Boxer, Carl Levine, George Soros, Jane Fonda, Sean Penn, Michael Moore, George Clooney (now there is an intellect), Susan Sarandon, Tim Robbins, Danny Glover, and the list goes on, and on, and on. There is no shame.
The collective stupidity of these clowns has the potential to destroy this country, after they turn it into a Socialist, then Communist State. Putin is smiling right now. The politicians above are self-serving fools who despise President Bush, and whose insane drive to regain political power guides their actions, not what is good for the country or the people. Again, it is my opinion. Some may think I am wrong.
Now, after all those words, what is the point to this story?---Hillary Clinton!!! I smile when I hear Hillary speak about other candidate's lack of experience. Hillary has no experience at all, except as under-study to her husband, Bill Clinton. Now there is a role model. Let's take a look at who was her teacher.
Bill Clinton signed enlistment papers and took an oath to serve in Sept, 1969, then failed to show at his military duty station. He was reclassified 1-A on Oct 30, 1969, as his enlistment with the Reserves was revoked making him officially AWOL. He avoided all the consequences of those misdeeds, and received a pardon by President Jimmy Carter Jan 21, 1977. Bill Clinton was the first President of the Untied States who was a pardoned FELON, and then he went on to be IMPEACHED.
When you hear the Democrats preach about our troops serving long, multiple tours in Iraq, please keep this in mind. As memory serves me, Bill Clinton reduced our military by:
-----709,000 Regular Active Duty Personnel
-----293,000 Reserve Troops
-----Eight Army Divisions
-----20 Air Force and Navy Air Wings with 2,000 Combat Aircraft
-----232 Strategic Bombers
-----19 Strategic Missile Submarines
-----Four Aircraft Carriers and 121 Surface Combat Ships and Submarines
-----and on, and on, and on.
I must admit to being one who truly believes it is time this country includes women as prospective choices for President of the United States, but Hillary Clinton is not one of them.
I must ask the question of even those real Democrats (not the far-left who embrace Socialism), do we really want to see, hear and smell the Clintons again, and for possibly another eight years. I am in great hope that the answer to that question is the same as it was for George McGovern---a very firm, yet loud---NO.
In conclusion, let me say again, no country in the world can present a true conventional threat to this great nation. The threat comes from apathy---Apathy from good, American people, who are paddling as fast as they can. There is little time left to get deeply involved with politics after taking care of family and the daily grind of making a living.
However, we are at the McGovern cross-roads again. The outcome of the 2008 election will affect every breathing individual in this country. Socialized medicine, doing away with the Bush tax cuts, increasing taxes, reducing the military at a time this country faces possibly the biggest threat in its history, cutting and running in the Middle-East, allowing Iran to develop nuclear weapons and becoming dominant in the Middle-East, bowing to the will of George Soros, the Hollywood Elite, and enriched far-left news organizations, and living with the risk of more Clinton level scandals and indiscretions is beyond comprehension to me.
My plea is for all Americans to look closely at what has occurred during the past 12 months in the Democratic Congress, and visualize the state of our country after four years of President Hillary Clinton, backed by a Democrat controlled House and Senate. I think that is scary enough to awaken the good Democrats, and even an apathetic nation.

All Aboard . . . SNOWBALL EXPRESS

Christmas is for children. Without them, adults such as my husband and I who have suffered the death of an adult child and who have no grandchildren to sink the energies of the holidays into, leave the tree in the attic.
2003 was our last year to revel in the Christmas season, to place the lighted deer and angels on the hill to greet our son Sgt Patrick Tainsh as he entered our driveway from Fort Polk, Louisiana. Unmarried and with no children, the void created after Pat's death in Iraq, February, 2004 has left my husband and me, and other parents across the nation, readjusting to survive the holidays in various ways such as skipping them or traveling.
But this season, on November 29, I felt the depths of the Christmas spirit fill my soul again as I put on a holiday sweater, a Christmas cap, my silver snowflake earrings and pendant necklace and headed to the Columbus, Georgia airport for SNOWBALL EXPRESS.
I had been contacted by my friend Kathy Upchurch, national president of the Gold Star Wives of America, to help with the send off of a number of children and widows of our nation's fallen heroes to the 2nd annual Snowball Express event held in Southern California.
 The mission of SBE, an all-volunteer, non-profit organization, is to "help create new memories and a few days of joy for lives that have been shattered by the loss of their fallen hero. It is America's chance to give a gift of gratitude to the children and spouses of those men and women in the U.S. Armed Forces who made the ultimate sacrifice since September 11, 2001." This year American Airlines, who knew nothing about Snowball Express eight weeks ago, according to SBE Chairman of the Board Roy White, stepped to the plate. Within two weeks American created a schedule for their planes to provide transportation to and from Los Angeles Airport for moms and children across the nation. Their destination, the happiest place on earth, Disneyland.
With Kathy's help I connected with the president of my local area chapter of Gold Star Wives, Leta McNair. Leta is a Vietnam widow who had three small children and who knew no such support at her time of loss and grief. Within a week Leta acquired free parking at the airport for the mom's vehicles from Thursday, November 29 to their return on Monday, December 3. By one o'clock on November 29th, the small airport terminal in Columbus, Georgia where I and Georgia Patriot Guard Riders have stood together in the past to honor the arrival of fallen heroes back home, we now stood together with smiles and hugs for the fallen's widows and children.
Patriot Guard members helped carry luggage to the check in counter, handed out goodie bags to the kids provided by the God Bless Fort Benning organization, and presented to moms roses provided by Publix Supermarkets. The most fun came when Patriot Guard Riders held the children's hands and walked with them to sit them on their Harleys and Hondas. Young boys and girls smiled as their small hands clutched the handle bars and they pretended to drive the motor cycles that had been driven many a mile in honor of fallen heroes like their dads.
This small airport terminal bustled a few happy hours with greetings and appreciation from local Columbus Council member, Wayne Anthony, other Vietnam era Gold Star Wives, and Ladies Auxiliary to Veterans of Forge in Wars, Department of Alabama. The National VFW through their state chapters donated $60,000 to the success of SNOWBALL EXPRESS.
The Columbus, Georgia airport personnel and security gave all the support possible to make these few hours a wonderful memorable sendoff for these families. When boarding time came, over twenty Patriot Guard Riders with their grand American flags stood in two rows that created a pathway of honor for the moms and children to walk as they headed into the security check where they had to remove their shoes as we all do since 9/11.
The reason their husbands and dads sacrificed their lives. Husbands and dads who I know are smiling upon each of their loved ones and us as we do all that is possible to bring a few hours of comfort and joy. And sons like mine who smile down knowing his dad and mom are doing as well as they can to not forget Christmas, but to find a way to put holiday joy back in our hearts.
For this year, I'm thankful for SNOWBALL EXPRESS, American Airlines, and all those who made SNOWBALL EXPRESS possible so grieving military survivors can go where no tears are allowed. For providing me a few special hours to help to create a wonderful send off for these extratordinary children and mothers, heroes, military families, who placed a needed joy back into my heart this Christmas. |

An elderly woman had just returned to her home from an evening of church services when she was startled by an intruder.
She caught the man in the act of robbing her home of its valuables and yelled, "STOP! Acts 2:38!" (Repent and be baptized, in the name of Jesus Christ so that your sins may be forgiven.)
The burglar stopped in his tracks. The woman calmly called the police and explained what she had done.
As the officer cuffed the man to take him in, he asked the burglar, "Why did you just stand there? All the old lady did was yell a Scripture to you."

WELCOME to the New Year!! We at What Are We Fighting For hope you had a very Merry Christmas.
Let's start this New Year with a new attitude; one of common sense, service, sacrifice and citizenship. How do we do that? Here are some hints that will help you to determine your political and personal fortunes and futures this year.
Politically:
1. Here's a twist - stop listening to what politicians are telling you what they are going to do - look at what they have done. Rarely do people have significant and sustained changes in their behavior after the age of 25 without some dramatic intervening incident in their lives.
2. Exercise your citizenship - register to vote and when there is an election at the local, state or national level - VOTE!
3. When you are going to the polls to cast your ballot disregard the majority of what you have read or heard during the campaigns. Instead refer back to #1 and realize that party lines, political agendas, polls and propaganda are designed to seduce you into a certain form of thinking. Think for yourself but use evidence and past behaviors of candidates to form your opinions.
4. Serve - service can be to your church, community, schools or nation. The method is not important, what is important is that you use this opportunity to help others. NOTE: This does not mean to ENABLE but to help. People stuck in a pathological approach to life WILL remain in their pathology up to and until something of such a great significance occurs to FORCE them to address their choices and behaviors.
5. Sacrifice - time, money and energy are the measures of your sacrifice. Sympathy and empathy are simply blankets that we wrap ourselves in to experience the nature of the moment. Act! Vince Lombardi once said, "Do something, even if it's wrong!"
6. Use your common sense - one of the indicators of mental illness is "If you do the same thing, the same way again and again and again and again and expect it to turn out differently - you have a problem." Common sense in this country has given way to political correctness. Our governmental agencies at all levels operate from a Utopian view point. Your household operates from a point of either financial responsibility or financial irresponsibility. Which do you want to use?
7. Be prepared - so often in the past few months rumors of economic ruin, social sabotage and even rebellion against oppression have been discussed by call-ins to the radio shows Col Bond and I have participated in. Remember Katrina? You can't evacuate a major metropolitan area. Remember the ice storms, fires in California, tornados, floods and hurricanes of last year? Be prepared to protect your family and participate in their survival. It takes hours or days for the Red Cross to respond with food, water and shelter; days or weeks to restore services; and during this time the criminal element wants what you have.
8. Practice being unreasonable - stand up for what you believe in. Find others that believe as you do. Don't accept this gradual but "inevitable" slide into a future and a country you won't recognize. It can be changed but it can only be changed by action, dedication, service, sacrifice and citizenship.
9. Value your family - and let them know they are valued. Do right things, even when they are hard. Teach your children strong values and encourage them to do those right things, not the politically correct things.
10. Remember God! Remember him; protect his presence in our country, in our government, in our business but most importantly in our families and our hearts.
This month starts the rest of your life; Tim McGraw has a great song out called "Live like you were dying." The message is that someone had a wake-up call and began living his life instead of just focusing on making a living. He went "ski-diving, rocky mountain climbing and did 2.7 seconds on a bull named Fu Man Chu." The last few lines go like this:
And he said some day I hope you get the chance
To live like you were dyin'
Like tomorrow was the end
And ya got eternity to think about what to do with it
What should you do with it?
What can I do with it?
What would I do with it?
My question is what will you do with it?
For the personal side I provide these words to live by from author Kurt Vonnegut's MIT Graduation Speech a while back:
Ladies and gentlemen:
Wear sunscreen. If I could offer you only one tip for the future, sunscreen would be it. The long-term benefits of sunscreen have been proved by scientists, whereas the rest of my advice has no basis more reliable than my own meandering experience. I will dispense this advice now.
Enjoy the power and beauty of your youth. Oh, never mind. You will not understand the power and beauty of your youth until they've faded. But trust me, in 20 years, you'll look back at photos of yourself and recall in a way you can't grasp now how much possibility lay before you and how fabulous you really looked. You are not as fat as you imagine.
Don't worry about the future. Or worry, but know that worrying is as effective as trying to solve an algebra equation by chewing bubble gum. The real troubles in your life are apt to be things that never crossed your worried mind, the kind that blindside you at 4:00 p.m. on some idle Tuesday.
Do one thing every day that scares you. Sing. Don't be reckless with other people's hearts. Don't put up with people who are reckless with yours.
Floss. Don't waste your time on jealousy. Sometimes you're ahead, sometimes you're behind. The race is long and, in the end, it's only with yourself. Remember compliments you receive. Forget the insults. If you succeed in doing this, tell me how. Keep your old love letters. Throw away your old bank statements.
Stretch. Don't feel guilty if you don't know what you want to do with your life. The most interesting people I know didn't know at 22 what they wanted to do with their lives. Some of the most interesting 40-year-olds I know still don't.
Get plenty of calcium. Be kind to your knees. You'll miss them when they're gone. Maybe you'll marry, maybe you won't. Maybe you'll have children, maybe you won't. Maybe you'll divorce at 40; maybe you'll dance the funky chicken on your 75th wedding anniversary.
Whatever you do, don't congratulate yourself too much, or berate yourself either. Your choices are half chance. So are everybody else's. Enjoy your body. Use it every way you can. Don't be afraid of it or of what other people think of it. It's the greatest instrument you'll ever own.
Dance, even if you have nowhere to do it but your living room. Read the directions, even if you don't follow them.
Do not read beauty magazines. They will only make you feel ugly. Get to know your parents. You never know when they'll be gone for good. Be nice to your siblings. They're your best link to your past and the people most likely to stick with you in the future.
Understand that friends come and go, but with a precious few you should hold on to. Work hard to bridge the gaps in geography and lifestyle, because the older you get, the more you need the people who knew you when you were young. Live in Northern California once, but leave before it makes you soft.
Travel. Accept certain inalienable truths: Prices will rise. Politicians will philander. You, too, will get old. And when you do, you'll fantasize that when you were young, prices were reasonable, politicians were noble, and children respected their elders.
Respect your elders. Don't expect anyone else to support you. Maybe you have a trust fund. Maybe you'll have a wealthy spouse. But you never know when either one might run out.
Don't mess too much with your hair or by the time you're 40 it will look 85. Be careful whose advice you buy, but be patient with those who supply it. Advice is a form of nostalgia. Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth. But trust me on the sunscreen.

Giving Thanks For Our Blessed Holiday Season

Sixty-six years ago today in 1941, marked the beginning of the greatest challenge to our beloved country's independence and the freedoms that all Americans enjoyed. With thanks to God, the generation of this time united as one to overcome what might have been . . . becoming our greatest in what they did in effort and spilling of blood on many foreign lands.
They did so too with many volunteering in the military knowing what war could mean to them and their loved ones. What a proud and noble deed for love of America that allows us to enjoy today what they fought and died for in World War II.
Well, in many ways the same can be said for our current generation of young who all have "volunteered" with many serving and having served in harm's way with the same mindset . . . in the name of freedom and safeguarding the American way of life.
It also made me think about the holiday season this time of the year that we each celebrate in our respective faith way . . . with an overwhelming majority doing so with our divine God in mind. I then found myself writing the poem, Holiday Blessings, which I hope is a reminder of the sacrifices made that allow us to enjoy the holiday season in December and all the other holidays too.
So, please keep our brave, honorable troops in your prayers and thoughts during the holiday season . . . and provide words or more to those serving in harms way and elsewhere who will not be home to share in joyful celebration with their loved ones.
Wishing you, your loved ones, along with our treasured troops and their families a very safe and happy holiday season!

Commentary by Bob Anderson: When this project we call What Are We Fighting For? first began I knew an integral part of the leadership must be the inclusion of a Chaplain. I went to my dear friend and comrade B. J. Garner, one of the most Godly men I have had the privilege of knowing. At the end of this article you will find his bio, but for now a word from our Chaplain.

Thanksgiving Day has come and gone for another year. However, the blessings we enjoy should be appreciated daily.
The following is a list that was given to me by an Army Chaplain, Major Jerald Garner (my brother). They are worth your attention.
THANKSGIVING THOUGHTS

If you woke up this morning with more health than illness, you are more blessed than the approximate one million people that will die this week . . .
If you have never experienced the danger of battle, the loneliness of imprisonment, the agony of torture, or the pangs of starvation, you are ahead of 20 million people around the world . . .
You came to this church today without fear of harassment, arrest, torture, or death. You did something almost 3 billion people in the world cannot do . . .
If you have food in your refrigerator, clothes on your back, a roof over your head, and a place to sleep, you are richer than 75% of the world . . .
If you have money in the bank and in your wallet, and spare change in a dish somewhere, you are among the top 8% of the world's wealthiest people . . .
If your parents are alive and still married, you are very rare (especially in the United States) . . .
If you can read this message, you are more blessed than the millions of
people in the world that cannot read anything at all . . .
